Her son, 22, was detained 17 days ago while working for a freight company, despite having legal documents, a scheduled asylum hearing in 2028, and no criminal record. Vergara describes his detention conditions as inhumane, with her family only receiving limited information and her son suffering from overcrowding and health issues in detention centers. She highlights that over 74% of ICE detainees are non-criminals, and many have completed their legal processes but remain detained awaiting deportation. Vergara has called on the Colombian government and the Foreign Ministry to coordinate emergency repatriation flights, including logistics support from the Colombian Air Force, and to establish dialogue with US authorities to expedite the process. She emphasizes the emotional toll on families and the need for Colombia to protect its citizens abroad, advocating for immediate action to ensure their safe return.
