Breeze Airways Launches First International Flights from New Orleans, Rhode Island, and More
Breeze Airways, a U.S. startup airline founded by JetBlue's former executive David Neeleman, is expanding into international markets after receiving certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The airline plans to launch its first international routes early next year, with seasonal nonstop flights from New Orleans to Cancun starting February 7, 2026, and from Norfolk and Charleston to Cancun beginning in January. Additional routes to Montego Bay and Punta Cana are also planned. The airline's international expansion marks a significant milestone, as it is the first sizable U.S. carrier to gain FAA certification for international flights since Virgin America in 2016. Breeze aims to target leisure travelers with fares starting as low as $99 one way, and is optimistic about demand for its premium cabins, which are seeing strong interest. In Rhode Island, Breeze is testing a new $159 weekly flight from T.F. Green Airport to Cancun, scheduled for eight Saturdays from February 18 to April 4, as part of its effort to grow its presence in the region. This route is part of Breeze’s broader strategy to connect smaller markets with international destinations. At New Orleans International Airport, Breeze is set to significantly increase its local operations, with plans to double staff and shift its fleet to Airbus A220-300 aircraft, which will feature first-class seating and more international capabilities. The expansion aligns with the airport’s goal to enhance connectivity and attract more international travelers. Breeze’s growth is also seen as an opportunity to fill gaps left by other low-cost carriers facing financial difficulties, such as Spirit Airlines, which is reducing its capacity. The airline continues to operate charter flights, especially for sports teams and major events, and plans to expand its charter business, including upcoming international sporting events like the FIFA Club World Cup. Overall, Breeze Airways is positioning itself as a key player in connecting smaller U.S. markets with international destinations, leveraging its cost-effective model and expanding fleet to meet increasing demand for leisure travel.
