Senator Cortez Masto Introduces No Coffee Tax Act Against Trump Tariffs, Senate Denies Fast-Tracking

Senator Catherine Cortez Masto has introduced the No Coffee Tax Act to eliminate tariffs on coffee imports, which currently range from 10% to 50% due to President Trump's tariffs announced in April. The legislation aims to revert coffee tariffs to zero, citing that 99.9% of U.S. coffee beans are imported, mainly from Brazil, which faces a 50% tariff. The move responds to a 40% year-over-year increase in coffee prices, affecting local businesses such as Hub Coffee Roasters, which raised prices by 30-60%. The U.S. Supreme Court recently heard arguments on the legality of the tariffs, with President Trump asserting that tariffs are vital for national security. Despite bipartisan support, the Senate denied a fast-track motion for the bill when Senator Mike Crapo objected, citing concerns over isolated exceptions in trade policy. The bill's rejection delays efforts to exempt coffee from tariffs amidst rising coffee prices, which have increased 41% in grocery stores over the past year.
