Extreme Cold Wave Hits Northeast with Polar Vortex Influence and Snowstorm
The northeastern United States is experiencing its coldest weather of the season due to a polar vortex outbreak, bringing dangerously low temperatures and snow. Temperatures are expected to drop into the single digits or below zero across much of the region, with wind chills reaching as low as -35°F in parts of northeastern New York, such as Lake Placid and Saranac Lake. Wind gusts could exceed 50 mph, causing potential power outages and tree damage. This Arctic blast, originating from eastern Canada, is forecast to be the most severe of winter 2025-26, with record cold temperatures and wind chills in the minus-30s. Snowfall is expected from Michigan to Ohio and across New England, with up to 4 inches in some areas, accompanied by strong winds and blowing snow. The cold snap will also lead to dangerous wind chills, posing risks of hypothermia and frostbite, especially with exposed skin. A warming trend is anticipated to begin by mid-next week, bringing average to above-average temperatures to the East, but the immediate future remains extremely cold.
