Record-Breaking Sale of Rare Fabergé Egg at $30.2 Million

A rare crystal and diamond Fabergé egg, known as the Winter Egg, sold for a record $30.2 million at Christie's auction in London, making it the most expensive Fabergé piece ever sold. Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas II in 1913 as a gift for his mother, the egg is made from carved rock crystal with platinum and 4,500 tiny diamonds, featuring a snowflake motif and a surprise inside—a basket of quartz flowers. One of only seven remaining in private hands, it surpassed the previous record of $18.5 million set in 2007. The Winter Egg was crafted by designer Alma Pihl and symbolizes the Romanov dynasty’s opulence before the Russian Revolution, which led to the family’s execution in 1918. The egg’s history includes being sold off by the Bolsheviks, changing hands multiple times, and setting several auction records, including a 1994 sale for over $5.6 million and a 2002 sale for $9.6 million. Experts highlight its unique design, craftsmanship, and artistic value, with estimates for future sales exceeding £20 million ($26 million). The auction underscores the rarity and enduring allure of Fabergé’s imperial eggs, with only 50 ever made and most now housed in museums or private collections.
