Global Fintech Innovation: Africa's Accelerator, UK Skills Academy, and Scotland Universities' Initiatives

Visa has launched its fifth Africa Fintech Accelerator cohort, featuring 18 startups from 28 markets, with a focus on cross-border payments, stablecoins, and AI-driven solutions for risk assessment, fraud prevention, and digital identity. This expansion signals growing innovation beyond traditional tech hubs in Africa and aims to support early- and growth-stage fintechs through mentorship and technology support. Meanwhile, in the UK, the Financial Regulation Innovation Lab (FRIL) has established the FRIL Skills Academy, a pioneering online platform supported by the universities of Strathclyde and Glasgow, to address skills gaps in financial services, especially in AI, data, and regulatory compliance. The academy offers microcredentials, short courses, and executive education accessible 24/7 via a virtual platform, fostering lifelong learning and industry collaboration. Both initiatives aim to enhance skills, innovation, and competitiveness in financial technology, supporting economic growth and financial inclusion across regions.
