Italy Prepares Venues for 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics and IOC Praises Progress
The 2026 Winter Olympics will be hosted by Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, marking the most geographically extensive Winter Games in history, with 15 sports venues spread across Lombardy, Veneto, Trento, and Bolzano. Italy benefits from its Alpine region, which includes existing and renovated facilities, emphasizing sustainability by relying on pre-existing infrastructure. Key venues include Milan’s San Siro Stadium for the opening ceremony, the Fiera Milano Rho exhibition center transformed into ice hockey and speed skating arenas, and the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena, the only new permanent venue. Cortina d'Ampezzo will host alpine skiing, bobsleigh, luge, and curling, with historic venues like the Cortina Sliding Center reconstructed for modern use. The Olympic Torch Relay will span 12,000 km across Italy, involving over 10,000 torchbearers. IOC President Kirsty Coventry, the first female IOC president from Africa, highlighted her commitment to showcasing athlete stories and values, emphasizing the importance of authentic representation and support for athletes. Coventry recently visited Milan’s Olympic Village and praised the progress of the venues, including the Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena, which is nearing completion. The Games will feature a mix of existing, renovated, and new venues designed to ensure sustainability and legacy, with preparations also including urban development projects in Milan and other host towns.
