NASA Evacuates Crew-11 Early from ISS Due to Medical Emergency, New Command Scheduled

NASA has made an unprecedented decision to bring four astronauts home early from the International Space Station after a medical emergency involving one crew member. This marks the first time in the station’s 25-year history that a mission has been cut short for health reasons. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman announced the early return, with Crew-11 members Zena Cardman, Mike Fincke, Kimiya Yui, and Oleg Platonov scheduled to return on Jan. 15 via SpaceX's Dragon Endeavour capsule, after undocking on Jan. 14. The crew's departure will leave a skeleton crew of three on the ISS until a replacement crew arrives, possibly in February. The medical issue is not an injury but related to the effects of microgravity on the human body, and the astronaut is reported to be stable. NASA and SpaceX are monitoring weather conditions for the splashdown in the Pacific, with current forecasts favorable for a safe return. Additionally, a change of command ceremony on the ISS will occur on Jan. 12, with veteran astronaut Mike Fincke handing over command to Russian cosmonaut Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, prior to the early crew evacuation. Experts have praised NASA's decision to prioritize crew health, and NASA officials confirmed that the upcoming Artemis II moon mission will not be affected by the early return of Crew-11.
