Road Safety Campaigns and Traffic Violations in Slovenia
Policemen across Slovenia are intensifying traffic controls to combat dangerous driving behaviors, especially focusing on mobile phone use while driving. The national campaign, 'Focus on the Road,' running from January 12 to January 18, aims to raise awareness about the risks of distracted driving, which significantly increases accident risks. In 2025, authorities identified 16,370 violations related to mobile phone use during driving, a decrease from 23,720 in the previous year, but the problem persists. Surveys reveal that 40% of drivers admit to using their phones without hands-free systems, with even hands-free calls still impairing attention. Experts warn that even a few seconds of distraction can greatly increase the likelihood of accidents, especially at high speeds. The campaign emphasizes that attention should be solely on driving, and all settings like navigation and music should be prepared before starting the journey. Pedestrians and cyclists are also urged to stay vigilant, especially when crossing roads, as they often look at screens and may not notice approaching vehicles. The authorities also highlight the dangers posed by other distractions such as adjusting navigation, listening to loud music, or emotional conversations in the vehicle. The campaign aims to change long-term behavior, particularly among young drivers, by promoting responsible use of mobile devices while on the road. The AVP also notes that external distractions like roadside billboards contribute to driver inattention and are considering legislative measures to mitigate this. The focus remains on reducing accidents caused by inattentiveness, which remains a significant road safety challenge in Slovenia.
