Starbucks Fires Employee Over Offensive Pig Drawing on Deputy's Coffee Cup

A Starbucks employee in Norwalk was dismissed after drawing a pig on a coffee cup served to a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy, an act considered offensive and inappropriate. The drawing, associated with a viral meme called 'John Pork,' is often used as a derogatory symbol against law enforcement. The deputy, Brandon Longoria, who was working a 16-hour shift, reported the incident, describing it as discouraging and disrespectful. The Sheriff's Department and the deputy union condemned the act, emphasizing that such behavior undermines community trust and public safety. Starbucks clarified that the drawing was not intended for the deputy and was part of a doodling series meant to cheer up coworkers. The company apologized to the deputy and the Sheriff's Department, stating that the employee was separated from the company. This incident follows previous controversies involving Starbucks and law enforcement, including a 2019 incident in Oklahoma where an officer's coffee was labeled with 'PIG' and the store was subsequently apologized to by Starbucks. The company operates approximately 17,000 stores nationwide, with about 4% unionized.
