Legendary Guitarist Steve Cropper Dies at 84

Steve Cropper, renowned guitarist, songwriter, and producer associated with Stax Records and famous for his work with Booker T. & the MG’s, Otis Redding, and the Blues Brothers, has died at age 84 in Nashville. Cropper was instrumental in creating Memphis soul music, co-writing classics such as 'Green Onions,' '(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay,' and 'In the Midnight Hour.' His distinctive, economical guitar style and solid rhythm work helped define the sound of soul and rock. Cropper was a key figure in the early days of Stax Records, forming the band Booker T. and the MG’s, which backed numerous legendary artists and produced hit instrumentals like 'Green Onions.' He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005, receiving a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. Cropper also played a significant role in the Blues Brothers band, appearing in the films and albums. He was ranked 39th among the greatest guitarists by Rolling Stone and was celebrated for his precise, impactful playing. Cropper’s influence extended through his production work and collaborations with artists like Wilson Pickett, Eddie Floyd, and others. He is survived by his wife Angel, their two children, and two children from his first marriage.
