US-Turkey Relations Strengthen with Erdogan Visit and Military-Trade Deals

US President Donald Trump announced he will host Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the White House on September 25, aiming to finalize trade and military agreements, including a large Boeing aircraft purchase, a major F-16 deal, and ongoing F-35 talks. Erdogan's previous White House visit was in 2019, during Trump's first term, amid a complex relationship marked by cooperation and disputes, notably Turkey's purchase of Russian S-400 missile defenses, which led to US sanctions and the cancellation of F-35 sales. Trump expressed a positive outlook on their relationship, noting Erdogan's return to the White House after four years. Meanwhile, Turkey is seeking US approval to produce some jet parts locally, with Erdogan planning to buy hundreds of Boeing airliners and Lockheed Martin fighters. Turkey aims to offset over $10 billion in payments for US aircraft through local production deals. Erdogan also intends to push for some of these parts to be manufactured within Turkey, reflecting a move towards greater self-reliance in defense manufacturing amidst ongoing US-Turkey military and trade negotiations.
